The u.s. food and drug administration (FDA) must certify each mammography facility. In order to be certified, the equipment, personnel, and practice of the facility must be reviewed by an FDA-approved accreditation body. Each mammogram machine has to be accredited. REPPED: Archived documents discovered at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's website reveal the agency knew in 2003 that HPV infections did not cause cervical cancer. Despite that knowledge, the FDA has continued to support the use of the Gardasil vaccine in compulsory vaccinations programs like the one announced in Texas earlier this year.
The FDA's own press release from 2003 admits that, "Most women who become infected with HPV are able to eradicate the virus [without intervention] and suffer no apparent long-term consequences to their health... |

None have been endorsed by the u.s. food and drug administration as explicitly safe during pregnancy—not an incidental point given that women are twice as likely to suffer from anxiety and depression as men.
The article was positioned as advice for doctors, but how is it that a summary of treatments for general anxiety disorder in the bible of medical research simply left out exercise? It's a case of what I would call clinical blindness. The mounting research on the neurological and psychological benefits of exercise seems to be hidden in plain sight. |

According to the u.s. food and drug administration, in order for a product to be called "yogurt," it must be made from milk that has been fermented by Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus, specific bacteria that result in a thickened, semisolid product.
A Serving of Food Lore...
Yogurt may be one of the oldest foods in recorded history. It is believed to date back as far as 10,000 years, with its place of origin being Turkey or Iran. |

The u.s. food and drug administration has approved CES devices for treatment of insomnia, depression, and anxiety.
In 1996, Daniel Kirsch, Ph.D., a neurobiologist, reviewed 103 studies of CES involving 4,848 subjects. He found there were significant changes in relaxation levels in the subjects who received CES treatments, including slower electroencephalograms and reductions in blood pressure, respiration, and heart rate. In a survey of health-care practitioners who used CES on their patients, 71 of 74 patients who had insomnia reported 95% improvement after using the device. |

The Koreans shortly thereafter imposed more stringent oversight over cosmetic ingredients than the u.s. food and drug administration, which had originally given the agency, in the aftermath of the Korean War, its name and mandate. The Koreans based their reforms largely on the guidelines contained in the seventh amendment.

HEART HEALTH: The u.s. food and drug administration approved a qualified health claim for peanuts in 2003: "Scientific evidence suggests but does not prove that eating 1.5 ounces of most nuts, such as peanuts, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease." A study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition showed that regular consumption of peanuts lowered triglycerides and improved diet quality by increasing nutrients associated with the prevention of cardiovascular disease. |

| In 1994, the Flavr Savr* tomato (engineered to resist rotting) was the first genetically modified food reviewed and approved by the u.s. food and drug administration for human consumption. FDA-employed scientists warned that altered products such as the Flavr Savr® could create toxins in food and trigger allergies. Shockingly, the FDA approved the "Frankenstein" tomato anyway with claims, "... the Flavr Savr passed muster so well that the rigor of its testing will not have to be repeated for other bioengineered foods. |

This led the American Herbal Products Association and the u.s. food and drug administration to issue a press release warning of potential risk from use of chaparral and suggesting that sale of chaparral be suspended. After more research, there was found to be no basis for the warning, and sale of chaparral was reinstated in 1995. There are still some precautions to take, nevertheless. Avoid chaparral during pregnancy and also while nursing. Excess use may be detrimental to the liver, kidneys, and lymphs. |

In 2007, the u.s. food and drug administration (FDA) took further action toward protecting consumers' health when it issued a final rule establishing current good manufacturing practice requirements (CGMPs) for dietary supplements. Under the final rule, manufacturers are required to substantiate the identity, purity, quality, strength, and composition of dietary supplements, and, further, to report all serious dietary supplement adverse events to the FDA.

Back in the USA, the u.s. food and drug administration seems to have heard nothing about this issue. It's doing nothing to protect children from such food additives and, in fact, appears to be taking a position that pretends the Southampton research never took place at all. There's nothing quite like burying your head in the sand when it comes to running the food and drug industry in the United States, is there?

WRONG. The u.s. food and drug administration (FDA) allows the term "reduced sugar" on products with "at least 25 percent less sugars" than leading brands. That means a reduced-sugar Coca-Cola must have 25 percent less sugar than the regular Coke. (In other words, the lower-sugar soda can still contain 75 percent of the sugar in the original formula.) Meanwhile, the term "no added sugar" is used for a variety of foods with naturally occurring sugars such as jams, jellies, and other preserves; yogurt; milk; some vegetables; and tomato sauce.

They are an excellent source of potassium, supplying about 300 to 400 milligrams per medium banana. The u.s. food and drug administration (FDA) recommends eating foods rich in potassium and low in sodium, which may help reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke.

Many cultures use banana peel for eliminating warts and also for soothing mosquito bites. Try rubbing your skin with a banana peel after an insect bite to reduce the swelling, itching, and irritation that often results after a bite. |

To protect against neural tube defects, the u.s. food and drug administration has mandated that folic acid be added to enriched grain products. This enrichment of grain with folate is estimated to deliver an average of 100 meg of folic acid daily.
Folate is needed to prevent birth defects called neural tube defects.
FOLATE AND CANCER
Folate may also play a role in cancer prevention. Cancer is thought to arise when DNA is damaged faster than it can be repaired. Folate assists with synthesis and repair of DNA. Folate also assists with methylation by increasing the SAMe in the cell. |

It is very encouraging to see that new treatments using light are increasingly being recognized as breakthrough methods for cancer and many other diseases. The u.s. food and drug administration recently approved "light therapy" to fight advanced esophageal cancer and early lung cancer—with fewer risks than are found with the use of surgery and chemotherapy. Although it has been known for over 100 years that light can kill diseased cells, it is only since a number of convincing research studies have been conducted that there has been a sudden resurgence of interest in light therapy. |
| This effect led the u.s. food and drug administration to allow the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.
And, for the same reasons, students were found to be more alert and to show increased academic performance when eating bananas regularly.
Constipation: High in fiber, bananas in the diet have helped restore normal bowel functions in people suffering from constipation.
Heartburn: Having a natural antacid effect, bananas have helped people suffering with heartburn. |
| While referring to outdated tests done by the u.s. food and drug administration and the World Health Organization, Professor Piper said, "The food industry will say these compounds have been tested and they are completely safe. By the criteria of modern safety testing, the safety tests were inadequate. | Today one in 150 children is autistic, though in some areas autism affects closer to one in 50 children. The u.s. food and drug administration has acknowledged that thimerosal can be a neurotoxin (knowing very well that mercury is a neurotoxin), and in 2004 stated that thimerosal-containing vaccines were associated with autism. As of 2003, there were 1.5 million autistic U.S. children, adding $90 billion per year to the already skyrocketing health care costs.

Also, there may be some caution about increased fish intake and environmental contamination. The u.s. food and drug administration and the Environmental Protection Agency advise that pregnant and nursing mothers and young children avoid certain types of fish and shellfish and limit others. In part, this may be due to the methylmercury content in fish such as albacore tuna, shark, sword-fish, king mackerel, and tilefish. Methylmercury is a known neurotoxin. |

Interestingly, the Globe and Mail reported that 10 of the 32 members of the u.s. food and drug administration panel voting to allow the return of Vioxx had worked as consultants, in recent years, for the drug's makers.10 This panel also supported the continued use of other cox-2 drugs, such as Celebrex and Bextra, for arthritis, despite their known cardiovascular risks, so long as they also carry a black-box warning. Given the evidence that arthritis can often be successfully treated with vitamins B-3 and C or other nutrients, these decisions raise many interesting ethical issues. |

What Do Food Labels Really Tell You?
The u.s. food and drug administration requires that virtually all packaged foods disclose their contents with a Nutrition Facts box and a list of ingredients. The intent is well meaning: to help shoppers make informed food purchases. Government agencies in many other countries have similar requirements.
We know that making sense of food labels may at first seem like trying to figure out the tiny print in a legal contract. Keep in mind that you've learned to master many complicated tasks and have read many instruction manuals. |

The proposed labeling changes also include language stating that scientific data did not show this increased risk in adults older than 24, and that adults ages 65 and older taking antidepressants have a decreased risk of suicidality. |

And in 2004 the u.s. food and drug administration has found perchlorate contamination in nearly all of the more than 200 samples of lettuce and milk it collected and tested nationwide. The federal government has not yet established a standard for the perchlorate, but the Environmental Protection Agency has adopted a provisional recommendation that contamination in drinking water not exceed a range of 4 to 18 parts per billion. Perchlorate, a chemical used in rocket fuel, munitions and fireworks, can affect thyroid gland functions and lead to developmental difficulties in children. |

These naturally occurring trans fats may account for as much as 21 percent of the food sources for American adults, according to the u.s. food and drug administration.10 Trans-fatty acids disrupt cell membrane function, because they change from a cis fatty acid to a trans-fatty acid, or from a curved shape to a straight shape; their actual molecular structure is thus changed and decreases the function of the cell membrane, which some people theorize is the actual brains of the cell and certainly critical for efficient movement of glucose into the cell. |

Contamination of fish is widespread. According to Rudolph Ballentine, MD, mercury toxicity is being reported with increasing frequency by physicians as well as dentists. The two main contributing factors seem to be a diet high in fish and the common use of silver-mercury amalgams for dental work. Fish consumption alone may be enough to cause mercury toxicity. |

HEART HEALTH: There are over forty clinical studies spanning forty years that confirm oats' ability to lower not only total cholesterol but also harmful LDL cholesterol, both significant risk factors for heart disease. The u.s. food and drug administration approved the first food-specific health claim for use on oatmeal packaging and in advertising in 1997. Eating three grams of soluble fiber from oats as part of a low-fat and low-cholesterol diet has been shown to lower blood cholesterol and low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), the particles that carry cholesterol into your arteries. |
